The Fortress of Girifalco (or Medicean) was probably used during the period from garrisons altomedioevale cheeks and Lombard, but the first documentation certain dates from 1258, when it was sold at Arezzo. After 1266 there were carried out various interventions remaking, then continued in 1300 under the Lordship of Casali. They were then Senesi to help Cortonesi both in the reconstruction of the fortress walls that, shortly before the city passed under the dominion of Florence (1411). The present appearance is the result of the restructuring sixteenth: imposing walls follow a path Keystone with four corner bastions of shapes and sizes. In between were the warehouse dust and the prison (south), four seats cannon (west), two embrasures (north) and three fuciliere (east). |

The Sanctuary of "Santa Margherita" |
| |
| |
On the cortonese hilltop is the sanctuary, right below the Medicean fortress. It was built up in 1297 near the pre-existent oratory consecrated to Saint Basilio, following Niccolo Pisano's plan. The church, after several readjustments during the times, was finally quite completely rebuilt in a Romanesque - gothic style by Presenti and Falcini from 1856, and completed by Castellucci in 1897. In the interior, on the high altar, in a silver urn is preserved the body of Saint Margherita (Laviano 1249 - Cortona 1297) |
